Protect Your Home This Spring & Summer!

Protect Your Home This Spring & Summer!

As camping season and summer travel pick up, many homeowners are locking the door and heading out for a well-earned break. But before you hit the road, a little preparation at home can go a long way in protecting your property and avoiding costly surprises when you return.

Here are a few simple but important steps to keep your home safe while you’re away:

1. Shut Off the Water (or at Least Know Your Options)

Water damage is one of the most common (and expensive) home insurance claims. If you’re going to be away for more than a few days, consider turning off your main water supply. At minimum, shut off water to appliances like washing machines and dishwashers. It’s a small step that can prevent a major headache.

2. Don’t Forget the Downspouts

Make sure your downspouts are properly extended and directing water away from your home. Summer storms can roll in quickly, and poor drainage can lead to foundation or basement issues while you’re gone.

3. Check Your Insurance Requirements

Most homeowners don’t realize this, but many insurance policies require someone to check on your home regularly while you’re away (often every 48–72 hours). If something happens and this condition isn’t met, it could affect your coverage. It’s worth a quick call to your provider to confirm.

4. Have Someone You Trust Stop In

Ask a neighbor, friend, or family member to check in periodically. Have them bring in mail, do a quick walkthrough, and make sure everything looks as it should. Bonus: it makes your home look lived-in.

5. Secure Entry Points

Double-check all doors, windows, and garage access points. Don’t forget less obvious spots like basement windows or acreage outbuildings. If you have an alarm system, make sure it’s set and that someone you trust knows how to access it if needed.

6. Create the Illusion You’re Home

A dark, quiet house is an easy target. Use timers for lights, leave a vehicle in the driveway if possible, and consider smart home features that allow you to control lighting remotely.

7. Take Care of the Outside

If you’re away for an extended period, arrange for lawn maintenance. Overgrown grass or an unkept yard is an obvious sign no one’s home, especially in rural or acreage settings.

8. Adjust Your Thermostat

No need to cool an empty home to the same level. Raise your thermostat slightly, but don’t turn it off completely, this helps manage humidity and keeps your home protected.

Final Thought

A little planning before you leave can save you a lot of stress when you return. Whether you’re gone for a weekend at the lake or a few weeks on vacation, protecting your home is just as important as packing your bags.
